| ...attended the
University of South Carolina for 3 years and was a shortstop during his
collegiate career...was selected by Royals in 1971 for the Academy...has 7
minor league seasons under his belt and saw 1st major league service in
final month of '77 with Kansas City...will bid for spot as spot starter
and reliever. |
| 1977 Highlights: Gary recorded
perhaps his finest pro season in '77, leading the Omaha pitching staff in
wins, innings pitched, complete games, starts, strikeouts and tying for
the shutout high (4)...he opened the season by winning 5 of his 1st 6
decisions and closed by notching victories in 10 of his final 13
verdicts...Gary won 7 consecutive decisions from June 25-Aug. 9...during
that span he worked 74.1 innings, allowing 64 hits, 31 runs, 26 earned
runs, and 33 walks while posting 37 strikeouts and a 3.14 ERA...he tossed
2 3-hitters, a 4-hitter, a pair of 5-hitters, and a 6-hitter...1 of his
3-hitters came Aug. 5 against Indianapolis in a 4-0 win in which he
allowed 1 walk and had 5 strikeouts...the other was a 7-inning outing in
1st game of an April 21 twinbill vs. Iowa...he allowed 1 run while walking
1 and striking out 2...he recorded his season strikeout high with 13
against Evansville on June 25 in a 4-0 triumph in which he scattered 5
hits and didn't walk a batter...on May 7 he worked 8.1 innings and allowed
only 3 hits to register a 3-1 triumph over New Orleans and on July
15 he fired a 4-hit, 7-0 win over Iowa...Gary joined the Royals after the
American Association playoffs and made his only big league appearance in a
relief role on Sept. 28 at Oakland...was charged with a loss in 10-inning,
6-5 contest while working 2 innings, allowing 2 hits, 1 run, and 2 walks. |

Gary is a veteran of 7 minor league season in the Kansas City, including
campaigns with Omaha the past 3 years...in 1975 at Omaha he tied for 3rd
in wins (12) in the American Association, was 6th in the loop in ERA
(3.23) and led pitchers in both putouts (26) and chances accepted
(58)...prior to jumping to Omaha in '75, Gary turned in strong
back-to-back seasons at Jacksonville in the Southern League...on August
26, 1973, he fired a 9-inning no-hitter against Birmingham...in 1972 at
San Jose, he fanned 112 batters in 122 innings and notched a 1-hit shutout
against Visalia on June 14...Gary had a no-hitter for 7.2 innings and
retired the first 13 batters in order in that contest...prior to beginning
his professional career Gary was a 3-sport standout at Dentxville High in
Columbia before attending South Carolina...played baseball, basketball,
and football. |
