...relies on a sinkerball and turned into a solid relief pitcher in 1981.
1981 Highlights: Jeff enjoyed a banner year at Omaha in 1981...he was one of the top pitchers in the American Association listing 2nd in saves (23), games (59), and games finished (41)...his saves total set an Omaha club record...ran his record to 7-0 with 16 saves and 2.04 ERA by July 19...did not lose a game until July 21...didn't allow a hit in 19 outings or an earned run in 45 of his 59 appearances...was used exclusively in relief in 1981...from May 23-June 26 he recorded 3 wins and 7 saves in 13 outings...twice during season he appeared in both ends of a doubleheader...on June 14 he recorded a pair of saves in a doubleheader at Springfield...For his efforts, Jeff was rewarded by being named to the All-America Baseball News American Association All-Star team for 1981...joined the parent club in September and worked in 1 game...September 21 vs. Minnesota Jeff tossed 3 innings giving up 2 hits and no runs while striking out a batter.
Career Highlights: Jeff started his pro career in 1979 and split time between Fort Myers and Jacksonville...he was signed as a starting pitcher and began working steadily in relief at Jacksonville...he totaled 4 saves in his initial year and logged 6 at Omaha in 1980.
